On Tuesday, November 2nd the 11th ranked Van Meter volleyball team travelled to the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids to participate in their first ever trip to State Volleyball. The Bulldogs faced the 2nd ranked Wilton Beavers in the round one quarterfinals. The Bulldogs fell with the scores of 12-25, 21-25, and 13-25.
Leading the Bulldogs in kills were Sophomore Abby Matt and Junior Zoie Vaught with 7 each. Senior Sydney Rainey followed with 5 kills of her own. Senior Emma Braun led the team in assists with 19. Senior Josie Durflinger, Vaught and Abby Matt all contributed by going 100% from the serving line. Senior Norah Matt added in 4 ace serves of her own and also led the team in digs with 24. Junior Sami McDonald led the team in block assists with 2, followed by Senior Sidney Nelson and Abby Matt with 1 each.
While the loss ended the Bulldogs’ 13 match winning streak that started back in September, the Van Meter volleyball team has a lot to be proud of this year. With a final record of 19-4, the Bulldogs were 1 of 8 2A teams to make it to state and won both the West Marshal Tournament and the Des Moines Christian Tournament that they were able to attend.
The Bulldogs finished 3rd in the West Central Activities Conference and had 3 first team selections of Norah Matt, Abby Matt, and Emma Braun, 1 second team selection of Sidney Nelson, and 2 honorable mention players of Sydney Rainey and Zoie Vaught. The coaches are extremely proud of the efforts of all of the players this season and especially the leadership of our 5 seniors; Norah Matt, Sidney Nelson, Emma Braun, Sydney Rainey, and Josie Durflinger. They will be missed very much next year.
