The Van Meter Varsity volleyball team has shown a lot of success in the very beginning of the 2020 season. With a record of 5-2 and a tournament win the Bulldogs are looking forward to continue to push into conference play in the weeks to come.
On August 25th, the Bulldogs faced the Des Moines Christians Lions at home. The Bulldogs lost this match up with the scores of 13-25, 20-25, and 11-25. Sophomore Abby Matt led the team in kills with 5, followed by Senior Sydney Rainey with 4. Seniors Emma Braun and Sidney Nelson split up the offense evenly by contributing 7 assists each. Nelson also added in 2 ace serves. Braun led the defense with 5 digs, followed by Senior Josie Durflinger, Matt and Nelson with 4 respectively. Junior Sami McDonald aided in the defensive side of the game with 2 solo blocks of her own. The Bulldogs will get another look at DMC on September 17th at DMC’s quad.
On August 29th, the Bulldogs travelled to West Marshall High School to participate in their annual tournament. Here the team went 4-1 on the day and resulted in a tournament win. To start the day, the Bulldogs faced the West Marshall Trojans. Van Meter won this match with the scores of 21-12 and 23-21. Leading the team in kills was Matt with 6 closely followed by McDonald with 5. Braun set up the team with 14 assists on the match. Durflinger and Matt chipped in 2 aces a piece. Nelson and McDonald stood out on the defensive end with 1 block assist and McDonald added 1 solo block for the Bulldog win.
Up next, the Bulldogs played the Davis County Mustangs. Van Meter won this game as well with the scores of 21-19 and 21-13. Nelson led the team in kills with 5, followed by 4 from Matt. Braun once again led the team in assists with 10, followed by Nelson with 6. Braun also led the team in aces with 2 on the match. Abby Matt held up an impressive 11 digs and Junior Zoie Vaught, Braun, McDonald, and Matt all had 1 block assist.
Next in pool play, the Bulldogs ran into the Grundy Center Spartans. The Bulldogs fell short this match with the scores of 13-21 and 15-21. McDonald led the team with 3 kills. Braun and Nelson split up the offense nicely with 4 and 3 assists respectively. Braun and Nelson also had the lone aces of the match with 1 each. Vaught held strong in the backrow with 7 digs and McDonald and Nelson put up 1 block assist.
In the first round of the Championship bracket, the Bulldogs faced the Columbus Catholic Sailors. In a close match, Van Meter won with the scores of 24-22, 19-21, and 15-11. The offense was nicely split in this match with Nelson leading the team in kills with 7, followed by Matt with 6, and Sophomore Emma Gilliland and Braun adding in 5 of their own. Braun and Nelson split with 12 and 10 assists. Braun and Nelson once again chipped in 1 service ace a piece. A trio of Junior Maia Abrahamson, Vaught, and Nelson all put up 8 digs to help the Bulldog’s defense. McDonald led the team in blocks with 4 assists, followed by Nelson with 3.
In the Championship match, the Bulldogs went up against the BCLUW Comets. The Bulldogs took the win with the scores of 19-21, 21-12, and 15-13. Leading the team in kills again was Nelson with 8 followed by Matt and Gilliland with 6. Braun led the way with 17 assists on the match. Durflinger and Nelson added in 2 aces from the serving line. Vaught was strong in the backrow with 8 digs, followed by 7 from Nelson and 6 from Matt. The Bulldog block was strong with McDonald adding in 3 block assists followed by Braun, Nelson, and Matt all chipping in 2 as well.
The Bulldogs showed some outstanding play throughout this tournament with the close matches and adjustments that had to be made going into the season. They truly earned and are proud of the tournament win.
On September 1st, the Bulldogs dove back into conference play and went up against the Interstate 35 Roadrunners at home. The Bulldogs won this match with the scores of 25-16, 25-11, and 25-12. Leading the way was Nelson with 8 kills followed by 7 a piece from McDonald and Abby Matt. Braun persisted with 11 assists from her end. Coming up strong from the serving line with aces was Nelson with 5, Matt with 4, and 3 from Durflinger. Senior Norah Matt had 5 digs along with Vaught. Durflinger and Nelson contributed 4 on their own a piece as well. Nelson ended with the lone block of the night with 1 solo block.
This puts the Bulldogs at an overall record of 5-2. Van Meter can be seen again on September 8th at Earlham with a 7pm start time.
