The Van Meter Bulldogs qualified for their third straight state tournament appearance Saturday with a win over Pella Christian 48-46. PC had handled the Bulldogs 53-38 nearly 3 weeks prior in Van Meter, but the Bulldogs came out and fought their way to the victory in the game that really mattered! Van Meter used their big man when handling the ball to throw a wrinkle into Pella Christian’s typical ball pressure they apply to most teams’ guards. This helped get the game to the speed that Van Meter wanted to play and the Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-18 lead at the half. Pella Christian came out swinging in the third quarter and even took the lead 32-30 before a Ryan Schmitt 3 at the end of the third put the Bulldogs up to stay. Pella Christian cut the lead to 2 or 3 multiple times down the stretch, but Van Meter made enough free throws to seal the victory and advance to the 2019 State Boys Basketball Tournament. Spencer Lamb led the way with 18 points which included 9-14 from the FT line. Ryan Schmitt added a big 17 as well. Van Meter hit 4 of 6 threes on the night and 14-23 free throws to help them to victory. The first game in Wells Fargo will either be Monday or Tuesday March 4 or 5.
