The Van Meter Bulldogs won their first state tournament basketball game Monday night with a 43-32 victory over Dike-New Hartford. It was a slow start for the Bulldogs offensively who did not get their first basket until the bench came in to score all 5 first quarter points with a Zach Madden three and a Brett Berg reverse layup, but still trailed 5-11. Van Meter climbed back into the game in the 2nd quarter to a tie at 13-13, but DNH hit two tough jumpers before the half to make it 18-13 in favor of DNH. Van Meter bursted out of the third quarter with a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the game and they never looked back. Anthony Potthoff led the Bulldogs with 12 and Ryan Schmitt added 11 points and 10 rebounds to help the cause. Freshmen Chris Schreck also played a key role in the second half with some great assists and scored 5 big points in the comeback effort. Van Meter will play the winner of North Linn and Des Moines Christian Wednesday night back in Well Fargo Arena at 8:15pm.
