The Varsity Baseball Team opened up its conference season with a 9-0 victory at Earlham on Tuesday night. The pitching duo of sophomores Anthony Potthoff and Brett Berg combined to shut out Earlham while striking out 12 batters and walking none. Potthoff started on the mound going five innings for his first win of the season while Berg threw the final two innings for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs offense was shutout through the first four innings but finally broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the fifth inning. An RBI single by Zach Pleggenkuhle and a two RBI single by Mitch Pomeroy put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Three more runs in the sixth and seventh extended the lead to the final tally of 9-0. Pomeroy and Pleggenkuhle would both end up with two hits a piece while Marshall Smith led all players with three runs scored on the night. JJ Durflinger led the team with a 3 RBI night at the plate and the lone extra base hit. Van Meter is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
