Girls Varsity Cross Country · Girls Cross Country Places 4th to Start Season

The Van Meter Girls XC team opened up the 2019 season at the Gilbert Meet hosted at the Iowa State Cross Country course. The Bulldogs battled through a very warm night and a challenging course. The competition was tough as 8 WCAC teams and 3 ranked teams were in the field.

Van Meter freshmen runners Clare and Mary Kelly led the way for the Bulldogs from start to finish. Clare Kelly got off to a quick start and remained in 3rd place from start to finish, never losing her position. Clare crossed the finish line in a time of 21:32, just under 50 seconds from the leaders. Mary Kelly came across the line shortly after her sister in 5th to lock up her own top-five finish with a time of 22:17. Clair Lauterbach, Matti Rebelsky and Claire Newell also ran strong opening races of the season to round out the Van Meter top 5 scoring positions. Lauterbach finished 27th, Rebelsky 34th and Newell 42nd overall for the Bulldogs.

As a team, Van Meter finished 4th out of 12 overall. Van Meter defeated #13 ACGC, as well as conference foes Madrid, DMC, Pleasantville, and Ogden.
