Van Meter continued it’s winning ways this past Friday night even when they weren’t sure exactly when they would get to play. With the unpredictability of the weather, both schools decided to try to move the kickoff up an hour. However, the weather had other ideas as a strong thunder and lightening storm delayed the start of the contest by about 30 minutes. Once the storms had past, the Bulldogs were ready to take the field and maintain their top stop in Class 1A District #6 action.
The Bulldogs elected to receive the opening kickoff and it didn’t take them long to put up the first points as Carson Rhodes scampered 71 yards on Van Meter’s very first offensive play. Sam Bardwell tacked on the PAT and it was quickly 7-0 with 11:42 left in the 1st quarter. WCV had ideas of answering the Bulldog score as they drove inside the Van Meter 5 yard line on their opening drive. However, the Van Meter defense had other plans as they held the Wildcat offense out of the end zone with the drive ending on 4th down with a sack by Chris Reames.
From that point on, the Bulldogs controlled every aspect of the game as Blake Fryar hit JJ Richards with a 58 yard TD pass, also in the 1st quarter, off a deflection by a WCV defender. Van Meter’s defense got in the act as they forced a WCV punt out of their own end zone that resulted in a bad snap and a safety for 2 points to make the score 16-0 with 5:30 left in the 2nd quarter. Van Meter quickly scored two more times before halftime as Carson Rhodes carried the ball in from 3 yards out and Fryar ran one in for a 43 yard score to make it 31-0 at the break.
Even with the wet conditions, Van Meter’s offense continued to roll in the second half with Fryar hitting Sam Thompson with a 21 yard TD pass for the lone score of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, Ian Abrahamson pushed the ball across the goal line for a 1 yard TD run and Hunter Coyle capped off the scoring with a 60 yard run down the far sideline. Bardwell was again perfect on the night with PATs going 6 for 6 and Fryar hit Thompson for a 2 point conversion after a mishandled snap to make the final score 52-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Van Meter’s offense was very impressive on such a wet night as they again rolled to 536 yards of total offense on 53 plays (404 yards rushing and 132 yards passing). While the Bulldogs did turn the ball over 3 times, the defense was up to the task as they only allowed their opponent 68 yards of total offense. This included 15 total negative plays (either tackles for loss or sacks) that limited the Wildcat offense to -25 yards rushing as the Bulldogs posted their 4th consecutive shut out.
Van Meter’s defensive leaders for the game included:
Connor Guess – 3 Solo Tackles, 1 Asst Tackles (including 3 Solo Sacks & 1 Asst Sack)
Sam Thompson – 4 Solo Tackles, 3 Asst Tackles
Cameron Smolik – 3 Solo Tackles, 3 Asst Tackles
