The Van Meter Bulldogs took on the Manson-NW Webster Cougars to celebrate Homecoming this past Friday night and the #1 ranked Bulldogs (according the DM Register) made it a happy Homecoming Friday night for all Van Meter fans. Van Meter raced to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. They lead 49-0 at halftime and added one more score in the 2nd half to make the final score 56-0. The Bulldogs move to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district play as they continue to lead in Class 1A District #6.
The Bulldogs opened the game by forcing a three and out by the Cougar offense. Following the punt by MNW, Van Meter methodically marched 61 yards in 8 plays to open the scoring with a 9 yard pass from Blake Fryar to Owen Crawford to make the score 7-0 following Sam Bardwell’s PAT. Bardwell followed that up with a perfectly executed onside kick that was recovered by Sam Thompson. One play later, the Bulldogs found themselves in the end zone again on a 45 yard strike from Fryar to JJ Durflinger and the Bulldogs were up 14-0 with 6:35 still to play in the 1st quarter. After forcing another Cougar punt, Van Meter struck quickly again as Carson Rhodes broke loose for a 75 yard TD run that extended the lead to 21-0 with a 2:22 to play in the opening frame.
The 2nd quarter provided even more fireworks for the home team as Van Meter scored four more times before halftime. Durflinger caught his second TD pass of the game from Fryar on a nice 5 yard pitch and catch. A little later, Rhodes ran 33 yards for his second touchdown of the game. That was followed by a 2 yard pass from Fryar to Sam Thompson and the Bulldogs closed out the half with Fryar keeping the ball around right end for a 28 yard touchdown run to make the score 49-0 at halftime in favor of the home team.
A lot of players saw action in the second half with the Van Meter offense continuing to move the ball consistently and executed very well. Antonio Angel carried for the final Bulldog score on a 7 yard TD run with 8:47 remaining in the game. The final highlight for Van Meter came as Bryce Cole sacked the Cougar QB on 4th down deep in Bulldog territory to end the final threat for the visitors.
Van Meter rolled up 21 1st downs and 446 yards of total offense (259 rushing & 187 passing) on only 38 plays (11.7 yds/play) behind a dominant performance by the offensive line that included Derek Golwitzer, Collin Godwin, Sean Boles, Connor Guess, Ryan Schmitt & Brett Berg to start the game.
