Game Recap

This past weekend, the #15 Van Meter Bulldogs volleyball team traveled to Madrid to compete in the Madrid Tigers Invitational. After dropping the first match, the Lady Bulldogs dug in and swept the rest of the day finishing 4-1 on the day and taking home the team championship.

In the first round of pool play, the Bulldogs were looking to get past an earlier defeat from West Marshall. After winning the first set 24-22, the Bulldogs had troubles finding consistency and dropped the next 2 sets, 16-21 and 9-15. That didn’t stop the Bulldogs focus for the day.

In the second round, the Bulldogs faced off with Ankeny Christian Academy. Working through some struggles, the Bulldogs found rhythm and defeated ACA 21-13 and 21-16.

In the final match of pool play, the Bulldogs faced the Baxter Bolts and really drove in aggressive serving and play to finish off the Bolts 21-8 and 21-10. The Bulldogs complied 17 aces to earn the victory.

In the Semi Final Match, the Bulldogs faced off with tournament Host Madrid. Leading the way for the Bulldogs offensively was senior Sophi Volk. The Bulldogs continued to put their season slogan “Team work makes the dream work” to use all of their resources to post the 25-18 and 25-20 victory to advance to the Finals.

In the Finals, the Bulldogs faced off with the West Marshall Trojans once again. The Bulldogs earned a 5 point lead deep in the first set when the Trojans rattled off some aggressive serving to cut the lead to 1. With the exchange of points and an attack error from the Trojans, the Bulldogs grabbed the first set 26-24. Following the 1st set thriller, the Bulldogs used what they had left in their systems and relied heavily on each other to pull out another 5 point lead late in the 2nd set. The Bulldogs never backed down and took the 2nd set 25-20 to avenge the early day loss to the Trojans.

The Bulldogs finished the day 4-1 putting their overall season record to 16-4 (5-1 WCAC). You can see the Bulldogs in action next Saturday, October 7th at the Martensdale-St. Mary’s Tournament. The Bulldogs will play a round robin tournament with the best record taking home the championship. Teams in the tournament include Earlham, Murray, Martensdale-St. Mary’s, Pleasantville, and #9 ranked Montezuma.
