Van Meter traveled to Ogden this past Friday night as they looked to open Class 1A District #6 play on a positive note. It didn’t take long for the Van Meter Bulldogs to set that tone against the Ogden Bulldogs. Van Meter scored 28 1st quarter points and never looked back as they moved to 3-0 overall on the 2017 season and 1-0 in district play.
After forcing a 3 and out on Ogden’s first possession, it took Van Meter all of 3 plays to score first on a 39 yard run by Blake Fryar. After trading a couple possessions, Van Meter finished the 1st quarter with a flurry. For our second score of the game, Fryar found Sam Thompson on a 15 pass. Carson Rhodes then scored on a 13 yard run just over a minute later. Finally, Thompson closed the scoring in the opening frame by intercepting a pass and returning it 38 yards for a TD. Sam Bardwell added all 4 PATs, so it was 28-0 after the 1st quarter.
The Van Meter Bulldogs continued to look strong in the 2nd quarter as Rhodes took a handoff and followed some outstanding blocking and exploded 55 yards for a TD, his second of the game. To close out the first half, Van Meter moved the ball 86 yards in just 6 plays in only 44 seconds as Fryar connected with JJ Durflinger who made a one-handed grab for a 34 yard TD reception.
Several reserves saw action in the 2nd half for Van Meter, but our Bulldogs continued to operate very efficiently. Ian Abrahamson scored on a 35 yard run in the 3rd quarter and Anthony Potthoff ran one in from 9 yards out in the 4th to close out the scoring for Van Meter. Ogden added a late touchdown that made the final score 56-6.
Sam Bardwell was a perfect 7-7 on PATs on the evening and the defense again performed very well against a good passing attack for Ogden as we limited them to only 104 yards passing and 224 yards of total offense. Van Meter also intercepted the Ogden QB twice while Van Meter took excellent care of the football and had zero turnovers.
