Van Meter High School
The Bulldogs first loss of the season came at the hands of Class 3A #8 Saydel in the championship round of the Saydel Tournament. The Bulldogs battled back from an early deficit, but were unable to hold on for the victory. After a scoreless first two innings, a leadoff walk for Saydel in the bottom of the third would get them started. A sacrifice bunt by Saydel led to an errant throw over the head of first basemen Kaleb Booge. That would score the runner all the way from first base. A later sacrifice fly in the inning put Saydel up 2-0.
The Bulldogs then broke out in the top of the fifth. Singles by Booge and Anthony Lowman, followed by a two-RBI double by Sam Thompson would tie the game at 2-2. Drew Gordon then singled home Thompson to give the Bulldogs their only lead of the game at 3-2. Saydel then answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with two runs courtesy of a one out double, HBP, and RBI single to knot the game up at 3-3 and a two out hard hit groundball that gave them the lead at 4-3. Van Meter then loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but was unable to push any runs across. Saydel picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring.
Owen Crawford took his first loss of the season on the mound, pitching against one of the most potent offenses in the state. He pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up four runs(one earned) on 5 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Carson Rhodes pitches 1 2/3 innings of relief giving up two runs on one hit while walking three and striking out two. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 16-1 overall. They will be back in action at Principal Park vs. Pleasantville Monday morning at 11:00.
