Bondurant Farrar High School
Van Meter High School
The varsity baseball team took advantage of five walks and one hit batsmen to go along with some timely hitting in defeating Bondurant-Farrar in the opening round of the Saydel Tournament Saturday. A sacrifice fly by JJ Durflinger opened up the scoring after Anthony Lowman’s leadoff walk, swipe of second base and advancing on a throwing error left him at third base. After loading the bases, Drew Gordon drew a walk to score another run. Brady O’Brien then hit a two RBI single to left to extend the early lead to 4-1. O’Brien would later score on an errant throw to third base as he advanced on a pitch in the dirt. An RBI triple by Sam Thompson in the second inning, RBI groundout from Gordon, Connor Guess scoring on a throwing error, and Carson Rhodes stealing home would extend the lead to 9-2 after two innings which proved to be enough to hold off Bondurant-Farrar.
Anthony Potthoff earned his second win on the mound after going four innings yielding 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out two, and walking two. Potthoff worked out of a bases loaded jam in both the first and second innings before settling in for the remaining two innings of work. Freshman Brett Berg pitched the final three innings for the Bulldogs, in his first varsity outing of the season. After a clean first two innings of work, Bondurant-Farrar was able to push across four runs in the top of the seventh but Berg was able to get out of the inning. His final line was four runs on seven hits with one walk over three innings of work.
The win improved the Bulldogs record to 16-0 overall.
